The broadcasting of television (video and audio) by digital signals, in contrast to the analog signals used by conventional TV. Digital television supports many different picture formats, such as HDTV, defined by the combination of size, aspect ratio (width to height ratio) and interlacing. The key advantages of DTV are that digital broadcasters can provide more digital channels in the same bandwidth, provide high-definition television service, or provide other non-television services such as multimedia or interactivity.
Digital television is expected to be introduced and eventually completely replace analog television in many countries in a near future.
